Cost per Hour of EU

See below the email sent to me and a copy of the leafletfrom the Tax Payers Alliance

Dear All,

I have attached a suggestion for a message relating to the costs etc of being in the EU which could be forwarded to all on your e-mail list. It is not party political as it relates to the TaxPayers Alliance campaign to "Stop the EU Rip Off." The most significant item is that Britains membership of the EU is costing the UK economy £13.7 Million/hour which is a horrendous figure and, needless to say 10 times the figure quoted by the EU. Clearly the 4 political parties that support Britain being in the EU have an awful lot to answer for. Lets hope that June 4th will be the start to their total downfall.

I have had to attach it as I am having terrible trouble with pdf conversions etc. If you can do the conversion to keep the wording straight so much the better. If you want to amend the document please feel free to do so but please note that I accept no responsibility for any changes made.

Thank you

Jerry

3 June 2009

Dear TaxPayer,

1)    According to the TaxPayers Alliance (see notes below), it is now costing UK businesses and UK taxpayers

£13.7 MILLION/HOUR to be in the EU

OR NEARLY £2000/YEAR FOR EVERY PERSON IN THE UK

THIS LEAVES FAR LESS MONEY IN YOUR POCKET TO PAY YOUR BILLS AND SUPPORT

YOUR LOVED ONES

So, what have YOU got from the UK being in the EU for over 35 years?

2) Our Parliament in Westminster is 80% redundant and will eventually be abolished.

3) You have already lost 80% of the effectiveness of your vote.

4) 500+ million people are legally entitled to live in the UK.

5) Total UK Trade on EU terms with the EU; a deficit (-£382 Billion).

6) Total UK Trade on EU terms with the Rest of the World; in profit (+£14 Billion).

7) Council taxes are higher than they should be.

8) The EU fisheries policy costs us £3 billion/year

9) Royal Mail has been decimated and 2500 post offices closed

10)  We will be forced to adopt the Euro increasing our bills even more

11) EU taxes on food imports and VAT cost an average UK family of 4 an extra £20/ week.

12) YOUR taxes have contributed to the £68 Billion cash we have so far given to the EU, and the £40 Million we pay the EU every day.

So,

Can YOU afford Britain’s membership of the EU?

If not

Explanatory Notes

1 See Taxpayers Alliance Chief Executive Matthew Elliott and best-selling author David Craig’s book “The Great European Rip-Off” published by Random House and TPA Research Note 46.

2/3 Last year over 80% of our laws were imposed upon us by un-elected bureaucrats and EU commissioners in Brussels. Westminster is rapidly becoming irrelevant in the UK’s law making process.

In addition, our MEP’s in Brussels are unable to effectively debate EU laws. There are only 78 British MEP’s out of 748 and they are all only allowed 60 seconds each to speak on each new law. Similarly, our MP’s in Westminster have NO say whatsoever in changing EU Regulations on their way through Parliament as EU Regulations become UK law automatically. SO you have virtually lost the power of your vote as NO PARTY in Westminster can repeal or even amend an EU law while we remain in the EU!

4 The policy of unlimited cross EU movement has always been a cornerstone of EU policy. We have therefore effectively lost control over our borders and who lives here. In addition, the EU is re-doubling its efforts to develop a common immigration policy. The EU already has extensive powers over Britain’s immigration rules, but now wants to expand these powers. The European Union aims to;

·          take over the coordination of immigration

·          promote legal immigration into the UK

·          control the fight against illegal immigration

·          manage the security issues which arise from immigration

·          importantly the EU also wants to control how integration is handled

The EU also aims to beef-up the powers of FRONTEX, its border agency, to implement the EU’s policies. Commission Communication: A common immigration policy for Europe: principles, actions and tools COM(08) 359 (This makes a complete  nonsense of any pretence the politicians may have over “British jobs for British workers”.)

5/6 See the Bruges Group leaflet, “How much does the EU cost Britain?” by Gerard Batten UKIP MEP. Clearly, out of the EU we can trade with the rest of the world on much better terms once the colossal burden of EU over-regulation is done away with. This will increase jobs in Britain and prosperity all round

7 The European Landfill Directive 1999/31/EC has had the impact of raising council tax as councils now have to pay £150 per ton of waste put into landfill. Money which would have been better spent in the UK to reduce council taxes, keep open hospital A&E services etc. For example, a two bedroomed flat in England has a council tax of £1200. A two bedroomed town house in Spain has a “council tax” of £300. Since joining the EU we have contributed £68 billion cash. Since joining the EU the Spanish have been paid e93 using our money.

8 The EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) has decimated our fishing fleet. While our fishing boats have been scrapped the EU is using our money to produce more Spanish fishing boats to come and pinch fish from our traditional waters. The EU’s policy of quotas means that 150,000 tonnes of fish caught by British fishermen have to be dumped dead back into the sea. (Global Vision note “The EU Waste Mountain” by Matthew Elliott and Dr Lee Rotheram.)

9 EU Directive 97/67/EC “Privatizaion of Postal Services” issued on 15 Dec 1997, began the introduction of an EU wide postal service. This allowed  foreign postal services to skim profitable business mail leaving loss making social post to the Royal Mail. We even subsidise the Royal Mail’s competitors by 6p/letter! .

10 The euro is a political ideal so the EU is unlikely to allow any other currency to exist within the EU. This will cost the UK taxpayers £30 billion to implement, we will have to give the European Central Bank what is left of our gold and dollar reserves and the price of food and services will inevitably increase, possibly  by as much as 10%. (Experience found after the euro was first introduced). William Haigue can safely claim that the “Torie’s will never take Britain into the euro”. The Tory party knows that as long as Britain stays in the EU the EU is bound to force the UK into the euro, doing it for them!

11 Dalia Grybauskaite (WHO?) Commissioner for the EU budget, commenting on the EU Common Agricultural Policy, told the Irish Times, “…. we pay, all of us, all consumers, two to three times more for food than we would pay without this policy”. See Eurofacts,28th Nov 2008. The Taxpayers Alliance quotes an extra cost of nearly £20/week for an average family of four.

12 The total budget payments to the EEC/EU since we joined in 1973 to 2008 amounts to £68 billion. The net present value is many billions more and may be as much as £500 Billion*. This represents the total value of the investment lost in the UK. Money which would have been better spent in the UK. (See the Bruges Group pamphlet, “How much does the EU cost Britain?” by Gerard Batten UKIP MEP.) This analysis quotes a cost for EU over-regulation well below that quoted by the TPA.

*No one will apparently officially produce this figure. So this is a private estimate using HM Treasury figures for UK budget payments to the EU and average annual figures for interest and inflation.
